cultural arts

The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville brought an entertaining cultural and educational performance to Factory Shoals Elementary School this October. With their support, Factory Shoals students experienced two educational puppetry performances and a puppet-making experience in their afterschool program. Leading the class was Damon Young, a teaching artist for Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts and the founder of his puppetry-focused educational organization.

The teaching artist used the creativity, kindness, and cooperation found in children to mentor students in the design and performance aspects of the puppetry arts. During his animated performance, Mr. Young used his skills to illuminate the history and art of Asia, including their long history of puppetry.

His program, entitled “Adventure Along the Silk Road with Mr. Damon and Fidget the Squirrel,” included mythical storytelling, authentic musical instruments, and Asian cultural traditions. Both teachers and students alike appreciated the performance for its entertaining demonstration of the history, music, stories, and puppetry traditions of Asian cultures, both ancient and modern.

Special thanks to the ARTSventure Cultural Arts Council and our Art teacher, Miss Bella Lugo for this amazing opportunity.
